Backstreet’s back ALRIGHT!

Dude, the 90s are back!! Cropped tops, overalls, and music. Okay, music never really disappeared (hello, BSB!)– I still jam to them daily. I will always be a fan of boybands. Judge me, I don’t care. Anyways, I went out and bought a pair of overalls a few months back and do you know how uncomfortable it is to wear overalls? This is a prime example of why girls go out of their way to be uncomfortable…ALL FOR A FASHION STATEMENT! Do you think g-strings are comfortable?? NO! They’re not. And neither are overalls. They bunch in the front and ride up you so bad (heaven forbid you have a long torso) and it’s a pain in the behind to go to the bathroom in. You better pray to the lord above that your straps don’t fall into the toilet. But it is cute, nonetheless.

When I’m not working out, updating instagram, playing with my son, or making little posts for my blog– I work at this nail salon called “Nail Pro”. I’ve done nails for a solid 8 years now (typical vietnamese girl, I know. Spare me the jokes!) and one of the perks of doing this job is seeing the local fashion statement that goes in and out of the salon. You have the wannabe jersey shore guidettes, you’ve got the hood rat hooped earring mamas, you have the conservative sweater tied over the shoulder, you’ve got the crop top– You name it and I’ve seen it. With the summer here, I noticed that every group share a common love for dresses. In my opinion, for a day time look, I want a dress that can be flowy and had a nice open back. I love an itty bitty waste with a slightly poofy bottom. This dress I borrowed from my sister: it fitted weird so I tied it at the top.

What is your go to dress?

Spring Flingin’ It!

Image Weather in DC is definitely reflecting the Spring season. We got to enjoy the nice sun and low 60s while Massachusetts still had low 40s. Warmer weather really puts people in a much better mood. I know I was more energetic and enthusiastic about being outdoors these past few days. Because the weather was so lovely, I took it upon myself to take this opportunity to throw on my favorite casual spring attire! WELCOME SPRING! My personal style is wearing what’s comfortable and cute. I wear basic colors but sometimes I like to add in a vibrant piece just to bring out the outfit. I’m also a broke college student and can’t really afford many name brand things, and that means I shop at places like Charlotte Rousse, Forever 21, and of course Target (or Tarje, if you’re fancy). Brands are nice, and I value the small amount of name brand things that I do have but lack of brand shouldn’t deter you from looking super adorable! I hope you guys like my look!

Got the blues.

We had a bit of a warm front that came through New England. It was warm enough to just wear a sweater and not freeze my bum off! I called my friend/photographer Shawn for a quick impromptu 10 min photoshoot and I think we’re becoming professional at these quick meetings. Ha, I really liked how these photographs turned out.

Hôm nay ấm áp ở New England.

Judge a person by Who they look up to.

Amy Cuddy, James Franco, Chiara Ferragni, Malala Yousafzai

Classmate, “Who is your role model”
Me, “Uhm…I don’t know. I have so many!”
Classmate, “Name top 4 without thinking..”
Me, “James Franco, Amy Cuddy, Chiara Ferragni, and Malala Yousafzai”
Classmate smiles, “hmm, interesting.”
Me (raising an eyebrow), “What?”
Classmate, “Just surprised you didn’t name Hillary Clinton or, like, Britney Spears or something”

This little conversation had me thinking. Aside from what the dictionary tells you, what makes someone a role model? What makes them a good role model or a bad? To me, I think a role model is someone that, you not only adore and look up to, but is also a figure that helps mold your future self. Whether they inspire you through their experiences, teaches you ways to help better yourself, or motivate you in a sense that makes you want to strive to be where they are– it’s pretty clear to me, that a role model is much more than just someone you simply look up to. Mine are:

  • Amy Cuddy – Harvard Professor and Psychologist. Her Tedtalk, “Your Body Language Shapes Who You Are” really gave me the confidence to put good use to “fake it until you become it.” Basically she explains that we’re not always going to be comfortable with everything but even when we are faced with life’s adversities — as long as we handle ourselves in a manner that we think would be appropriate, we can break out uncomfortableness and start becoming what we want to be. She’s the reason why I have such confidence.

  • Chiara Ferragni – blogger for The Blonde Salad, fashionist/designer. She started her career with a simple blog that she started in 2009. Her tips on fashion, pictures of travels, and her overall personality really makes brings that freshness to the world of social media. She taught me to always follow your dreams because you never know when you’ll catch a break!
  • Malala Yousafzai – education activist. This Pakistani girl had the courage to speak up about women’s right to education. There was an attempted assasination because she spoke so openly about her beliefs and even after that — SHE STILL spoke for the importance of educating women. It’s amazing how we complain about so many things when there are people out there that would die to have what we have. She reminds me to be appreciative of all of our rights and freedom, as well as never giving up in what you believe in.

  • James Edward Franco – actor, author, director, professor, poet, artist, model, etc — this dapper mother effer, is pretty much my idea of a perfect man. Not only is he good looking but is also brilliant and versatile. How many celebrities do you know that is so open with his fans on social media sites such as instagram? I could literally spend hours upon hours talking about this man but we’ll let his resume do all the talking. He motivates me to be brilliant

So, as much as I love Britney Spears and admire Hillary Clinton — these four are my role models.

Yes, let’s start out the New Year by being completely unoriginal.

Image

You know everyone is going to be posting about something pertaining to New Years—whether it’s about resolutions or reminiscing—everyone is talking about it. Let me just join that trend/bandwagon. I remember really looking forward to 2013’ because my 2012’ was kind of a tough year. My sense of direction was awful when it came to the whole “where do I go from here”? However, 2013—it was not so bad. I slowly got comfortable in my own skin. I met some pretty cool people that I think [hope] will stay in my life for a while. [Nicolette and I have already formed a solid bond of being soul sisters.] I don’t want to highlight things in bullet form because 2013’ wasn’t bad but it wasn’t all that great [besides my 4.0 GPA—I’m still  so proud of that. Ha!]

Instead, let me just list out everything that I plan on accomplishing for 2014.

  • Maintain the 4.0 GPA: This may be over the top nerdy but I want this more than anything because this is the single thing that I have complete control over. If I get below a 4.0, I won’t kill myself but I will be particularly more disappointed if I failed this goal versus the others.
  • Travel to Yucatan Peninsula: Because it’s freaking Mexico and I want to travel out of the country.
  • Eat clean and continue staying fit: If you want your body to look a certain way then you have to dedicate yourself. Plus there is nothing like the benefits of living a healthy life and having people go “wow, I want to look like that.” [A vain statement indeed, however—I say that about people all the time.]
  • Read 100 books: it might be a lot for some, or minimal to others, but to me—as well as Nicolette—this is something important. Reading is so important for mental stimulation. I want to expand my vocabulary and I want to better my writing skill.
  • Pay off all my credit card bills: I refuse to pay for a trip to Yucatan if I can’t afford it. This is good because I won’t be eating out or going out as much because I’ll either be studying, working out, or reading. TOO BUSY!

So those are my five goals. Five resolutions. I guess we’ll see how it goes. Now, onto Wardrobe Wednesday!
