3 beginning steps to Fitness

ImageQUICK UPDATE! I think when I think about it—I would consider myself a FIT chick. I’m not the most fit nor am I claiming to be the best fit but I am, in my own way, a FIT chick. I workout more than I go out, and I eat accordingly to my goals. Has there been times when I simply wanted to give up and just quit? Yup à check out my winter months. [It was SO not bulking season..it was just, gimme that McDonald’s season.] I get it, I totally do. Life just happens to get in the way sometimes, right?

A little over a month ago, I was talking to my friend about fitness and gushing over the fact that we LOVE looking at fitness photos. To the point where I believe it was a slight obsession. Then I decided that I was done being SkinnyFat and ready to get back to my old self. Here’s how I did it with 3 simple steps:

  1. I threw out CRAP food. You don’t realize how much you hoard food until you begin doing a full sweep. My mentality right now is, “out of sight- out of mind”. You won’t find chips, cookies, or instamac in this household! I also never realized this but I kept a lot of old pasta boxes, rice bags, and just half eaten cracker stuff. DISGUSTING! Once I eliminated CRAP from my fridge, I started stocking it with good things that would go bad after a week if I didn’t cook it. Which leads me to my number 2.
  1. Meal PrepI wish people realize how important it is to not only eat healthy but to also prep your meals! No, prepping meals is not just for competitors but it should be part of your [future] healthy lifestyle. By preparing your meals it not only helps you actually make the food all in one day so it doesn’t spoil sitting in your fridge but it helps you just do a grab an go the next day! ALSO the biggest part about getting those abs that people so desperately want is eating healthy! Seriously, meal prep would save you in the long run. Plus, tubawares are much easier to wash than plates and skillets.
  1. Fitness LogYou can do this in many different ways. Keep a notebook, an online spreadsheet, exercise log (they sell them at your local bookstore), OR you can be like me and just start a fitness instagram account. This will give you a visual of how your body can quickly change while also tracking your workouts on there. I keep my account public because there are endless amount of encouragements and motivations to help you continue on your fitness journey.

I’ll be doing more posts in regards to what workouts I do and I can’t wait to share you guys my amazing running plan that my best friend, Krista (promisesofcardio.com) came up with. Follow me at FitCLe on instagram to see my progress!

6 reasons why I workout

Before you guys read this and get completely bent out of shape about it…this is just my reasoning. My opinions. People can have different views on things such as why they work out but these are MINE. Don’t take offense to it if you don’t agree, that’s fine. I respect everyone’s opinion.

1. Muffin tops ain’t cute

Image
You guys ever heard of that phrase, “real girls have curves”? First off, no. I hate when people say that because 1. It is stating that those women who do not possess such physical attribute are not real. It’s as if they’re some sort of mythical creatures that only exist as for the sake of a meme. 2. I don’t care what anyone says but muffin tops (the thing that many people/women consider as a “curve”) is NOT CUTE. Extra flub over your pants is not something to be proud of. I’m not saying that everyone should be a size 2, but please consider looking in the mirror before going out in public. Or buy bigger jeans if you don’t want to work out. For me, I like fitting into my jeans and I know that if I have a muffin top, it’s time for me to get my happy ho-ho eating butt to the gym and make that flub cry because I refuse to waste my hard earned money on a bigger size. My body was made to fit into this specific size and I’m not going to let my unhealthy habits diminish that.

2. Be as bouncy as the energizer bunny
Endorphins are the best drug that you can take that are cheap and won’t kill you. The high that I get after a great workout is unexplainable. Just kidding, let me see if I can explain this: example, after a good leg workout—my legs might be jello-y and I may walk as if I have a stick shoved inbetween my buttocks but the sweat that is secreting from my body is giving me this glow that no lotion could make happen. I may stink but pot stinks too. My head feels a bit light but not the kind that makes you pass out. I smile, for no reason. It’s like my cheeks just naturally expand in an upward U’ because I think subconsciously I know I accomplished something. My eyes might look glistened but that’s just natural tears that comes from feeling like a badass. On top of that, I don’t get hungover from this—matter of fact, I get energized. I don’t need a coffee, or an energy drink because the endorphins are enough.

3. Me against Natural Skinnies
All throughout highschool, I have been that girl that can eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and not worry about my weight. Well, that freaking changed. Suddenly, I eat a french fry and I gain 2lbs in the tummy. WHAT! It goes to show that not all of us are blessed with a ridiculous godgifted metabolism that has the natural superpower to shit fat out like a bad bean burrito from taco night. Most of us have to actually work to maintain the body of a 17 yr old and I am part of that majority. My sister can eat three big macs in one sitting and she won’t gain an ounce. (LIFE ISN’T FAIR!) Which goes to my next reasoning..

4. Skinny Fat is real!

Image
Nothing drives me crazier than when I tell people about how much I need to workout and they say stuff like, “well it’s easier for you because you’re already skinny!” HELLO!! I JUST DRESS THE PART! I may be small but back to my first point, muffin tops ain’t cute. Also, just because someone is skinny than that makes working out easier for them? The audacity of the skinnies to be working out! My natural body frame might be small but it doesn’t mean that everything is as tight as it should be. There is such a thing called “skinny fat” and that’s when you’re small but completely and utterly unhealthy. Again, it really all depends on the body type. It’s not about being skinny or fat but mostly about being healthy. REMEMBER THAT.

5. Don’t be a hypocrite
I’m a jerk. Completely asshole. I’ll be the first to admit it. I might look at you weird if you’re huffing and puffing walking around the mall. I will shake my head if I see that you’re overweight and having a McDonalds bag in your hand. I might even make a fat joke or two about my friends who needs that extra motivation to go lift something more than a remote or a cheeseburger. One thing I won’t do though is laugh or make fun of anyone who is at the gym. It shows that they are taking the initiative to change their life for the better and everyone has to start somewhere. The only reason why I feel (and you all can completely disagree with me but I know you assholes all do it too) that I can poke fun of people is because I’ve been there! I have been the girl that eats two helpings of fatty cakes and been out of breath walking up the stairs but I did something to change it. I can’t make fun of someone for eating McDonalds if I’m going to go do the same thing in 2 hours. It’s just not cool to be a hypocrite. It’s almost like a right of passage once you’ve worked out—you earn the right to make fun of the unhealthy fat bodies. But pick and choose how to make fun of someone, I would recommend doing it behind their back and not to their actual face for the chance that they may sit on you. Seriously, you can be a jerk but don’t be a douche.

6. I want to be some trending motivational tumblr picture thingy

Image
Guys, this is serious. I would love to be one of those girls whose picture is what people put those gym quotes. Like, PICTURE -> Because squats. Or something like that. I want to be someone’s inspiration and motivation to be better. So many people have influenced me in a positive way that I want to be that for someone else. The most rewarding part from being physically fit is knowing that other people know. I don’t care what folks might think and say about “it’s all about what makes you happy”…because this would make me happy. When someone, someday, tells me that I’ve inspired them.

Tofu-Cauliflower Stuffed Peppers

Image

I had to get rid of a lot of stuff in my fridge before it went bad, so I decided to come up with my own recipe. This is my yummy Tofu-Cauliflower Stuffed Peppers. It tastes pretty good if you asked me (my son didn’t spit it out.) Here is the recipe for anyone who is brave enough to try this authentic Christina Le recipe. *best of luck to you*
Image

What you’ll need:
1/2 cauliflower
4 cups of Spinach
1 Shallot Onion (taste sweeter)
1/2 regular onion
1/2 lemon
2 Red Bell Peppers
1 package of extra firm tofu
chopped garlic (2 cloves)
basil
herbes de provence
chipotle spice
raw honey
sea salt and pepper

ImageIn a large skillet, slice a couple of of slices off your lemon and bring your water to a boil. While you’re waiting, wash and cut your veggies and tofu. Leave the bottom half of your peppers, unchopped and sliced the other half. Boil your cauliflower until they’re soft and also steam your pepper then remove them from the heat. Return the skillet and pour a dime size of olive oil into your pan. Once it’s warm, toss in your garlic/ regular onion. Then add your tofu and cook until it’s lightly brown and throw in your spinach and sliced peppers. Start adding your spices ( sorry, i didn’t measure because I eyeballed everything–so i would say, whatever you think! haha, sorry!!) I pour a bit of raw honey in because I wanted something kind of sweet too. Once everything is cooked, remove and begin stuffing your peppers. DONE!

ImageThe best part of this is that I KNOW this will be a clean meal because I doubt there can be a lot of calories in tofu and vegetables.

Healthier Seafood Salad

Image

When I think “seafood salad”– I automatically think about mayonnaise doused imitation crabmeat slapped in-between some bread with salt and pepper.  However, I have always been a major fan of real seafood; my stepfather is a fisherman and I am lucky enough to be able to eat seafood whenever I want. That being said, I am always looking for new recipes to try with them. This was the easiest, as well as tastiest, salad I have ever came across!

Image

What you’ll need:
Dressing:
3 Tablespoons white wine vinegar
1 large garlic clove, minced
1/2 Lemon
1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

Veggies:
1 tbs sea salt
3 Med Carrots, peeled and sliced
1/2 lb of green beans
1/2 Cauliflower
beets (optional)

Seafood:
1/2 cup of white wine
3/4 lb of extra lg shrimp (peeled and deveined)
3/4 lbs of clams
lemon wedges

ImageUsing a pot, add about 2 inches of water and bring it to a boil. Add salt, carrots, green beans, and cauliflower. Cook for about 5 mins then remove but keeping the water in the pot. Add the wine to the vegetable cooking water and adjust the heat until the liquid is barely simmering then add the shrimp and clams to the pot. Cover and cook until the clams have opened and shrimp turned orange. (about 5-6 mins). Whatever clams don’t open– throw away! Drain then add to the veggie mixture.

For the dressing, whisk the ingredients together and pour over your mixture– then toss like a salad! Serve as is and refrigerate leftovers.  🙂

Chard and Mushroom Wrap

Image

I have been searching for a nice quick healthy lunch idea instead of the typical tuna mixed with spinach or buying some sort of wrap from Tropical Smoothie Cafe. In December, I bought Giada de Laurentiis’s “Feel Good Food” recipe book for smoothies and juice ideas but I found that she had a lot of good tips and recipes for meals too! Perfect!! I found this particular recipe for Kale and Mushroom wrap and wanted to try it out. It was delicious but I wanted to try this with Chard instead of Kale. Chard is used a lot in italian cooking and is filled with lots of Vitamin A. Here is my version of Chard and Mushroom Wrap.

Image

Ingredients: 3 tablespoons olive oil
1/2 of and onion, chopped and diced.
1 medium leek, white and pale green part onl
8 ounces of mushrooms
1/2 teaspoon of kosher salt
1/2 freashly ground black pepper
1 (8 ounce) bunch of Swiss Chard
1/4 cup of Chicken broth (or veggie, if you want to go vegetarian)
1/3 cup of unsweetened dried cranberries
2 ounces of goat cheese, crumbled (1/4 cup), at room temp
5 eight inch wheat tortilla wraps.

Be sure to rinse thoroughly! Thinly slice the leek and coarsely chop the Chard.

In a large skillet, heat the oil on medium high then add the onion, leek, mushrooms, salt and pepper. Cook until they’re soft, about 6-7 minutes. Then add in the Chard and cook until they’re wilted, another 6-7 mins. Then add in the broth and cranberries and bring to a boil. Then remove from heat and add the cheese. Divide amongst wrap and enjoy!ImageImageImage

What sort of workout do you do?

Video

I get that question a lot and I never really know how to answer that. The truth is, I don’t stick to just one routine. I am constantly looking for different ways to change up my workout but I do focus on certain pairs of muscle groups at a time. This all comes down to what worked for me. I also love having fun at the gym and what better way to do that then to invite some of my best girlfriends? Here’s a preview of what we do. I promise I will start sharing my workout routine very soon! But until then…enjoy!
